A bed is only worth what you pay for it, here’s what you need to know when shopping for a new one…

If you answer yes to more than three of the below questions? If so, it’s time to get a new bed and a more comfortable night’s sleep.

  • Is the bed more than seven years old?
  • Do you ever wake up with neck or a backache?
  • Is the mattress cover torn or stained?
  • When lying in bed, do you ever feel springs or ridges beneath the surface?
  • When moving in bed, do you hear creaks, crunches or other suspicious noises?
  • Do you or your partner roll towards each other unintentionally?
  • Is the bed too small to give an undisturbed night’s sleep?
  • Is the mattress uneven or sagging?
  • Are the legs worn out?
  • Would it be embarrassing if anyone saw the mattress without its covers?

With so many different kinds of bed to choose from, it’s not always an easy decision. It’s essential you buy a base set that fits your needs. We recommend spending as much as you can afford on a new bed. There’s no such thing as a cheap bed, only a lower-quality one. Sale buys can be good value, especially at this time of year, but take care to avoid discount stores unless they’re selling well-known branded beds. Remember that a new bed may feel unfamiliar for a while, it can take about three weeks for you to get used to it.

PRO TIP: Don’t go bed shopping when you feel tired, everything will feel comfortable! And if you share a bed with a partner, make sure you try it out together.

If you’re buying a bed for a room that hasn’t had one in it before, or if you’re planning to get a bigger bed for your bedroom, you’ll need to make sure you have enough space. Ergonomic studies have also shown that couples sleep better in a bigger bed
